You will need:
walnut-shell powder as follows:
4 ounce short hair, 6 ounces shoulder length hair, or 8 ounces for long thick hair
3 cups boiling water (use coffee if your hair is hard to color or if you have grey hair)
1 Tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon lemon juice
Homemade natural highlights for brown hair herbal recipe:
1. In a medium sized bowl, pour boiling water or coffee over appropriate amount of walnut-shell powder.
2. Stir well to make a thick paste.
3. Let the paste cool for approx. 10 minutes.
4. Add oil and lemon juice and mix well.
Note:
Before applying, make sure you change into "junk" clothes. The paste will dye your clothing and towel if it comes into contact with them. It will also dye your skin so use a water based gel, around your hair lines. Petroleum jelly works well.
To apply homemade highlight paste:
1. Using rubber gloves evenly coat all of your hair with paste. (Start at roots and work down to ends)
2. Once coated gather all your hair up on top of your head and then cover with a shower cap. (You can also use plastic cling wrap but its a bit messier.)
3. Once your hair is covered with the shower cap, wrap your head in a thick towel. (This will keep the paste warm in order to cling to the hair better.)
4. Let paste sit for a minimum of two hours. (The longer its sits in your hair the more intense the highlights.)
5. After 2 hours have passed rinse your hair, shampoo, and condition.
Caution:
Do not use natural herbal highlight paste on chemically treated hair. The chemical can react differently than your normal hair possibly causing unusual color results.
